There is absolutely nothing easy about making the dreaded “first move” on someone that you like. Whether it is your first kiss ever, or your first kiss on a date or with a crush you’ve had your eye on for a while, it always tends to be a little bit awkward and uncomfortable. Yes, in some ways, the shyness and the uncertainty is part of the fun and makes for a cute story, but it always helps to have a few tips to make such a big first step a little bit more bearable and a lot less embarrassing.

I Tried Dating Like Sex and the City and Here’s What I Learned

It’s been SO MANY YEARS since the iconic show that is Sex and the City finished it’s incredibly legendary run on HBO. It was a groundbreaking program that shattered stereotypes and worked to shape and mold our cultural understanding and ideas about female sexuality, friendships, and success. Sure, by now Sex and the City has standout moments where it feels a tad dated and unbelievable, but there is no question that Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha, and Carrie gave us so many timeless life lessons on love, dating, loss, and moving on. “I couldn’t help but wonder” what would happen if I took the teachings of Sex and the City and applied them to my own life. Which character would I be most like? Would I learn more about myself and my love life through the lens of these characters than I have so far in real life? Honestly, it felt like I would.

Charlotte York

When I think of Charlotte, I generally think of her as being uptight and judgmental. I mean, she’s a somewhat stuffy gallerist who loves pearls, Burberry, and judging Samantha (for the same reasons she should be judging herself though, honestly). But despite the perception of her being uptight, we definitely see her walls come down throughout the course of the series. From Charlotte, some who seems to have everything, I unexpectedly learned a lot about loss and letting go. Charlotte definitely goes through some of the hardest experiences life and love can throw your way. Between her divorce from Trey and complications with fertility, she teaches us a lot about how to handle and overcome heartbreak and crushing disappointment. Though I have to say that for me, ending a relationship that lasted nowhere near as long as her and Trey’s isn’t exactly as extreme, her story gave me the sense that just because something doesn’t work out doesn’t make it a failure. There’s always a reason for it, and a way to rise beyond it and make your life even better than it was before, regardless of how much you loved someone before it fell apart. But, in order for that to happen, you have to put yourself back out there and take a chance on new people, even if the pairing doesn’t seem likely initially. Just look at how she and Harry ended up working out! You may not expect it, but it’s totally possible to find love where you least expect it, when you least expect it.

Miranda Hobbes

Miranda is definitely the most realistic out of the bunch, but she’s definitely is, to put it nicely, the most blunt and tells it exactly like it needs to be told. It may be what gets her a bad wrap with some fans, but someone has to be honest. Plus, it’s only because she cares about her friends so much. Plus, despite how dated the show can be at times, Miranda’s stance on so many things seems to stand the test of time the most. In comparison to the other characters, it may have been more noticeable, but today her unfiltered ideas and authentic understanding of herself is something that most women strive for today. In terms of dating, she also is the most progressive in a series that otherwise lacks a lot of diversity. She taught me it’s totally okay to be the realest version of yourself, while also looking outside of yourself and your own comfort zone to find people that you could end up interested in. She and Samantha infamously agreed that there is no such thing as a single soulmate, and in my own dating life, I am definitely beginning to agree.  There isn’t one person out there that is going to complete you, as you’re already whole the way you are. The only thing other people can do is complement what is already there, and you already are your own soulmate. This concept has resonated with me for a long time, so much so that I got a tattoo from one of my favorite books that symbolizes this idea. But who knows, maybe Miranda also had something to do with the inspiration deep down, too.

Samantha Jones

To be completely honest, I admire Samantha to an extent. She has an amazing career, makes a ton of money, and she takes what is hers – both in her career and in relationships. She turns the tables on societal norms goes through guys like guys stereotypically go through women, More than that, she does not take crap from anyone. A try-anything-once kind of girl, her adventurous spirit is definitely admirable. She doesn’t judge other her friends and supports what is best for them. If there’s anything that Miranda makes completely obvious, it’s that self love and self confidence is the absolute most important thing a person can give to themselves. When you have both of those things, you find an inner peace with whatever life throws your way, no matter what the struggle is. You can put yourself first without that meaning that you are selfish. You can still work hard and put your best foot forward in your career, and have it pay off. Samantha definitely trumps the idea that women can’t have it all (speaking of Trump, did you see the episode where he flirts with her…!?). When I tried to apply Samanthas lifestyle to my own, I have to admit that I couldn’t wrap my head around trying to be as promiscuous. I am throwing no shade and am not shaming her decisions at all, I am fully pro Samantha doing whatever the hell she wants, but I personally just couldn’t swing trying to have quite as many partners as her. What I have applied is the full blown confidence, and pursuing the things you do want fiercely. I’ve been more direct, more forward in my relationships and with work since making note of Samantha’s ~numerous~ successes. But at the end of the day, she’s also taught me that being single is totally fine and there’s no need to rush anything, because it’ll definitely come. No pun intended.

Carrie Bradshaw

And last but not least, there’s Carrie. She’s wild at heart, and she loves relationships that are just as wild as she is. Or if not wild, at least a bit messy. Oh, and duh, she loves shoes. An it-girl and icon in every sense of the word, she was (and remains to be) an obvious fan favorite. To be completely honest, I knew about Carrie’s antics and crazy relationships before I even watched a single episode of the show. I have to say that I’m a lot less high maintenance and fashion forward than her, but everyone has to respect that she really does have amazing taste in clothes and an impeccable wardrobe. So, my first takeway from Carrie is simple. It’s to always put my best foot forward, even if my footwear may never be as fashionable. To be fair though, if I was willing to risk being able to pay rent for a pair of shoes, I may be able to compete with her. You don’t have to go crazy with your appearance, or try harder than necessary for anyone, but it is important to care about yourself and present yourself in a way that makes you feel your absolute best – for you. When you look good, you feel good, and that definitely translates to fierce confidence when on a date or making a first impression when meeting someone new. Don’t settle for anything less than the perfection you deserve for yourself, which leads me to my all time favorite Carrie Bradshaw quote: “Some people are settling down”, some are settling and some people refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies.” It may sound like the cheesiest thing in the world, but I find it to be so true. If something or someone doesn’t make you feel amazing, don’t give it your time or your energy. If the thought of being with someone doesn’t excite you in a unique way, don’t waste your time. Life is too short to spend it with someone that doesn’t feel extraordinary to you.

What I’ve learned overall from Sex and the City

If there is one thing I have learned from all of the episodes I have watched and conversations I have had with friends about this one-of-a-kind show, it is that everyone is deserving of love. It is not an easy path to discovery. It’s hard, it’s messy, it’s heartbreaking, it’s hilarious, it’s confusing, and it’s a journey that is completely your own. But just because it is your own, does not mean that you’re alone. You’ll always have friends to help you along the way, to lean on, to laugh with, to judge with, to make mistakes with, and to help you make sense of whatever the heck love is anyway.

So you’ve done it. After swiping through what may have seemed like a never ending stream of guys posing next to exotic animals and/or girls sipping rosé on rooftops, you’ve finally landed on a few good matches. Even better, if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve actually gotten some pretty good responses from some of those said matches. Now comes the fun part — putting down the dating app and finally meeting IRL. But, if you’re anything like me, that alleged fun part can be super nerve-wracking and totally anxiety inducing. And for good reason.

First dates made on dating apps are notorious for being a little awkward and at least a tad bit uncomfortable. For whatever reason, there’s a weird sort of stigma surrounding matches made on Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and other online sites. It’s as if not having the traditional “meet-cute” creates a strange self-consciousness when dating. But, there’s no reason that should stop you from missing out on great dates with the amazing people you can meet at the swipe of a finger!

Here are some tips and tricks to make that first date A LOT less awkward.

Text Beforehand

If you have a few days to kill before meeting up for the first time, texting your match before the date is a great way to build a rapport and learn a little bit about each other before sitting down face to face. A little bit of banter back and forth before actually meeting in person can absolutely make the first encounter a lot less awkward and give you a lot more fodder for things to talk about when you’re with each other in person. If you’re not a huge texter, no worries. A simple short and sweet convo asking about their day shows interest upfront and does go a long way. Just try and think of it as a super simple warm up to the real thing.

Use your date’s profile as a prompt

Does he have a photo with a bunch of friends from what appears to be his college soccer team? Does she have a photo in front of the Louvre from a possible semester of studying abroad in Europe? You could be totally wrong, but it doesn’t hurt to inquire about the photos people include in their profile! Profile pictures on dating apps aren’t just eye-candy, they are also often a pretty good indication of a person’s personality, their hobbies, interests, and style. This is especially true if they are looking to actually enjoy themselves on dates and get to know other people – which is a plus for you, of course. Every single photo is a potential talking point and conversation starter that they’re probably comfortable talking about — given that they broadcast it on the app. There’s a good chance you’ll strike a chord and break the ice early on in the date. Buuuut on that note….

Don’t stalk your date too hard

We’re all guilty of doing a bit of extra online sleuthing when it comes to the social media profiles of crushes and potential dates. Even though a oneover or two of their Facebook or Insta — if it’s linked to the app — isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s super easy to go overboard with google deep dives. There’s absolutely nothing more awkward than accidentally asking a date about something that you probably wouldn’t have known without a scroll down their LinkedIn or a skim through their tagged photos. In most cases, there’s a lot more fun in keeping a bit of mystery and having to learn about the person across from you than there is in finding out about someone in the depths of Google! That being said, if someone’s online presence is giving you bad vibes or the sense that they’re a total creep, it’s probably best to cancel. Sorry, not sorry.

Be engaged

This should almost go without saying, but there is nothing worse than a one-sided conversation on a first date. If your date asks you a question, reciprocate. It may feel a bit forced initially to add “and what about you?” to the end of every response, but it shows interest and allows you to get to know the other person more. Plus, pay attention to body language.

Ditch your phone (sort of)

Unless you want to seem super disinterested, keep your phone out of sight. Not only does texting distract you from conversation, it’s also pretty rude. Why go on a date at all if you’re going to spend it talking to people that aren’t there? To each their own, but if you’re still actively using other dating apps, you may want to turn off any notifications from them. Yes, there are always so many fish in the sea, but making it known how wide you’re casting your net in may not be the best idea until you’ve communicated more openly about what you’re looking for out of the relationship or online dating in general.

That being said, don’t get rid of your phone altogether. If you hold onto it, a quick dash to the bathroom may allow to ask your bestie for some quick advice, or get a boost of confidence when you brag to all of your friends about how well it’s going.

Choose your location wisely

Try to find a place that is appropriate for a first date, period. If you’re getting drinks or dinner, try to choose a location that’s nice, but with a manageable price range. A romantic, fine dining establishment definitely doesn’t have to be in the card for a first date, but you also don’t want to go somewhere gross and grimy. There’s no point in going out at to get to know one another better at a loud, overcrowded bar if you can’t hear anything the other person is saying. You know that fake laugh you do when you pretend to hear something someone said, even though you have absolutely no idea what they were talking about? That’ll be your entire date if you end up meeting at an obnoxiously noisy venue.

Make sure you’re comfortable

I mean, who doesn’t want to look their best and slay in the perfect first date ensemble?? No one. But there’s also something to be said for comfort. Don’t torture yourself in the name of “looking good” with shoes that scrape the back of your heels, or with a skirt you have to keep pulling down while sitting on a bar stool – unless of course that is what you’re comfortable in. Yes, worrying about what to wear is a huge part of a first date, but you should spend JUST as much time thinking about what makes you feel good and what makes you feel comfortable as you spend trying to figure out what your date will think. Regardless, you’ll obviously look amazing.

Take a chill pill

Relax. Take a deep breath. There’s no way you’ll be able to enjoy yourself if you’re worrying about

Be yourself

When it comes to dating apps, this can be especially tricky. For most people, of course their profile pictures are the absolute best, coolest versions of themselves. If you’re given five photos or less to showcase yourself, that’s to be expected! There’s nothing wrong with this of course (unless you’re a Catfish), but remember, you ultimately want the person you’re dating to like you regardless of what you look like, what you’re wearing, good day, bad day, makeup, no makeup – the list goes on and on. Even if you’re just looking for some casual fun, you should only settle for someone that is 100% cool with the real you, all the time. Plus, the more authentic you are and the less pressure you put on yourself to make a “perfect” first impression, the more fun you and you your date will both have.

How to end

Unless the first date it totally mis and your match was the absolute worst, always end on a positive note. Even if you never intend of going on another date with this human being ever again, be polite! A “It was so nice to meet you” never hurts. If it was a complete success, don’t be afraid to say so! A second date is a totally different ball game though…

These Dating Trends are Worse Than Ghosting

Over the past few years, the phenomenon that is ghosting has taken over and transformed dating and relationships. No, of course I am not talking about Casper the Friendly Ghost here, because there is absolutely nothing friendly about ghosting. It is exactly what it sounds like, completely vanishing without explanation, and slowly fading out of someone’s life by cutting off all communication. It says that relationship is not worth the effort of or meaningful enough to actually go through all the steps of a traditional breakup. And trust me, the feeling of being ghosted on sucks. When a relationship ends in such a way, it is confusing, hurtful, and getting closure can feel like it is totally out of the question.

In the past, the act of ghosting tended to be reserved for hook-ups and way more casual relationships, but with the new rise in popularity of dating apps, there’s also been a new rise in horrible ways to end relationships that maybe just are not meant to be. There are honestly no excuses for these new dating behaviors, but I will try to make some sense out of these new trends in how we treat people we’re “seeing”.

Haunting

Sticking with the theme of scary names for dating phenomena is haunting. It is one of the worst, most awkward, and most uncomfortable by far. Haunting is basically just like ghosting, but with this the relationship never really goes away because of one creepy reason – social media. At first, you go through all of the same emotions of being ghosted. You become okay with it. But then, all of the sudden – BOOM – out of nowhere in your suggested friends, there is the guy or girl you went on a few dates with. In the Discover section of your Instagram. WATCHING YOUR INSTA STORIES. Sometimes, the people haunting you are even so bold as to LIKE something that you post. It is particularly perplexing because, of course, the two of you have ceased contact given that ghosting took place, but the person is still around looming in the social sphere that is your online life. The other person clearly still cares enough, in the case of Snapchat and Instagram story viewing, to seek you out and watch the things that you have gone on and continue to post after your relationship has ended.

It feels like you can’t get rid of them or escape them, even after you have totally stopped seeing them altogether. It can be a hard to see their name pop up out of the blue and have that reminder of the relationship and the way things ended, especially if the attention is unwanted. It makes it difficult to fully move on and forget everything that happened because it serves mixed signals. Because they watch your stories all the time, or even like your photos, it may feel like it would be okay to reach out and text them again, or convince you that they may still be interested in you. As difficult as it may be, do not give in! Things ended for a reason, and if the ghost doing the haunting really wanted to reach out, they would.

Benching

If you are familiar with sports, you know that sitting out a whole game on the bench without any playing time is not a good thing. Being benched in the game that is dating is basically just as bad, if not worse. When you’re being benched by someone, you essentially never get “playing time” with them. You get strung along in a series of interactions that keep you thinking that the other person is possibly interested in you, despite the fact that they are literally giving you the bare minimum in terms of communication. In this case, that bare minimum is generally flirting and compliments that keep you thinking that you are a player of interest, when really, the person that has you benched is playing the field. To them, you are someone that could potentially be subbed in, or at best, a “pinch hitter” for a random night of fun. Benching is the worst part of the dating game, always leaving you unaware as to whether or not the person really ever likes you.

Crumbing

According to Urban Dictionary, breadcrumbing is “the act of sending out flirtatious, but non-committal text messages to members of the opposite sex in order to lure a sexual partner without expending much effort.” Well, regardless of the sex of who one is trying to lure, there’s no denying that this is one of the worst new ways to lead someone on. They give you just enough to make you think that they are interested in you with a like or a comment on your photo here, a compliment slid into your DMs there, or a flirty snap every once and a while. You never really know if the person actually likes you or is into you or wants to eventually meet up, but they give you the idea that they really want to based on how they interact with you online. It is similar to benching in that it perpetuates the idea that someone can be put on the sidelines or be put on hold until they have sorted through the rest of their potential dating prospects. Eventually, the occasional ego boosts from the kind words will get old and frustration will set in. Don’t waste your time on the bench, find yourself your own home run.

How you should actually break up with someone:

Hopefully these new “dating norms” are not here to stay. If you still aren’t totally into someone after a while of dating or getting to know each other, there are much, much better ways to go about breaking up with the other person. It is not fair to the other person involved to drag them along by leading them on, giving them sparse sprinklings of attention, or to completely disappear without a trace. Instead, consider these options:

Plan ahead: Don’t wing a breakup. Consider how the other person will react and plan to have a calm, collected response that is sensitive to their feelings and emotions

Do it privately in person, if possible: Aside from ghosting/haunting/benching/crumbing, breaking up over text or e-mail is one of the worst ways you could possibly end a relationship. Of course, this isn’t always easy or possible but it does allow for a more open conversation.

Listen: You probably will hear some things that are upsetting, as naturally people can often be a tad harsh when going through a break up, but it is important for the other person to feel heard. The problem with these new dating trends is that the other person is rarely afforded the opportunity to speak their feelings about the end of a relationship to the other distant party involved, so this simple action makes a world of difference in how a relationship comes to a close.

Be discreet: While it may feel cathartic to vent, it is a bad idea to go posting about everything that happened between you and so-and-so. Yes, you are entitled to your emotions and should be able to express your feelings openly without judgement, but it helps to keep the break up more amicable by avoiding social media as your platform to do so.

What to do if any of the above has happened to you:

There is no denying that it is a pretty crappy feeling. The end of every single relationship, no matter how it ended, is always hard to deal with and make sense of in its own way. You deserve to let yourself feel your feelings, even if that means being down for a little while. It is totally normal, especially if you’re dealing with a scenario that leaves you without the option to have complete closure. BUT, don’t mope for too long! Reflect, and then move forward. Deep down, you know that someone that ghosts, or benches, or crumbs, definitely has some communication issues they need to work out, so think of it as dodging a bullet early in terms of having some kind of problems with communications down the road when the breakup would’ve been a lot harder. Plus, you deserve a person that is going to be attentive, and responsive, and want to talk to you, and be happy and excited by the prospect of a relationship with YOU, not a bench filled with a bunch of other potential “soulmates”.  Be confident, know that you are SO awesome, and know that the way someone chooses to immaturely end a relationship is no indication of your character!­ Unfortunately, there is no guarantee in today’s world that you won’t encounter any of these same problems with dating again, but by being aware of these behaviors and knowing your self worth, you are much more likely to find someone who matches exactly what you want out of a relationship!
